After reading the comic book Bone I had a whole new take on comic books. I never really understood how to read and understand a comic book until I read this one. Comic books really make you use your imagination and constantly keeps you guessing what’s going to happen next. This is important for children because if they are not interested in what they are reading then they can become bored and not enjoy reading. I think that having children read comic books is a great idea because not every student might be interested in reading, and this is a good way to make sure that all the students are enjoying reading. Sometimes its hard to get children to read because they think they have to read, but if you give them a fun book like a comic that sparks their interest they might continue to read. Comics are very creative and imaginative and part of reading requires that you are able to use your imagination so it is important to make sure you have creative books and comics to make sure the children are learning and not bored in class. Some cool lesson plan ideas could be to have students make their own comics and share them with the class.

Shakespeare and Poetry Units
The Shakespeare unit was interesting I was never really able to understand Shakespeare until reading it and performing it in class with our groups. After doing the group Shakespeare acts I definitely had a better understanding of it after acting it out, and seeing every other group act it out. I also liked the watching the film on the Hobart Shakespeare Documentary. It gave me a lot of good ideas of how to get the students involved with also understanding Shakespeare by acting it out in a play with their class. There are lots of fun and creative ways that you can use to help students understand the material. These are some good websites to remember for ideas about Shakespeare.

The poetry unit was fun because I really learned a lot of new ways that you can approach poetry that’s less intimidating to teaching it to students. Like an example from Koch’s book on how to teach poetry by having the class work together in making poems so students can feel more involved. Also its important to have students start off poetry but not using rhymes because some students are at more advanced levels than others and it’s a way to not exclude anyone, and some students can write better poetry when they don’t have constraints on what they have to write or write about. Its important to let students be creative when writing poetry and learning. There are lots of neat and creative lesson plan ideas you can use with poetry, for example you could have the students write about their favorite animal, favorite Holiday, favorite color, favorite food, and whatever other ideas they might have. You could also have a themed week of poetry to get the students more involved in the unit that way. These are some good websites about poetry.

Children and young adult novel unit.
Speak is a good book to have students read in junior high and high school. It really helps you to understand different types of students who might be stereo-typed for being quiet or anti-social, and that there might be more to them and they might be having other problems. It can also helps students to maybe not be so critical during high school. Also it can help students see beyond someone that is quiet and maybe more students might reach out to students that are quiet or they think might be having problems. It could also help students to see that if they took the time to find out why a certain student behaved the way they did there might be more to a rumor or story they hear about a student. This book could also help students to be more accepting of people who go against what is popular by calling the cops and reporting a party because there was a problem. Students could also envision how others might feel that are socially rejected and have no friends like Melinda experienced. It might help students want to befriend people who might have problems socially and be more considerate of their feelings.
Star girl is a great book to have students read in elementary school, junior high, or even high school. Its great because it illustrates a girl who is confident and totally comfortable being herself and outgoing. She is not afraid to be different and stand out, even if people make fun of her. She wears bright and different colored clothing than anyone else she makes her own style. She is thoughtful and treats everyone kind even when others are mean or harsh towards her she just always if full of kindness. She brings her ukulele to school and plays it at school if front of everyone and sings because she likes it. Most other students would be afraid of doing that because its different but not star girl. She cheers for opposing teams and cares about everyone. This book can be a good way for students to see that it is okay to be different, and do what makes you happy instead of trying to fit in with everyone else and not stand out. This could also help students see that people are individuals and different and you shouldn’t make fun of them or bully them for it. So this could be tied into a lesson plan about creativity, and students could dress up how they would like to come dressed for school if no one were to care if they were different after reading the book. This might help students to become more accepting of people that are different. Students could also bring their favorite musical instrument to school. You could also have a share day where students bring their pets to school, like Star Girl brought her pet rat Cinnamon.

The Austere Academy is a good book for elementary students because its creative and is so different from any other book series. Students would probably like this book because of the use of big words and how it is kind of scary. This is also a interesting book because not only does it use big words, but it also gives a definition for them and an example so children can learn new vocabulary. Its about three children that are orphans because their parents passed away, and they struggle from place to place. The count olaf is always trying to think up creative ways to get back into their lives. He’s definitely not a nice person and he doesn’t treat the children well. They try to stay as far away from him as possible but he always seems to find them. The count olaf appears at Prufrock Prepatory School disguised as coach Genghis the new gym teacher. From there he tries to develop a plan where he can get the children expelled from school so he can home school them himself. His plan fails because the children outsmart him and devise a plan to avoid running laps and study for their exams to determine if they can stay at school. Mr. Poe comes at the right moment at the end and helps the children reveal count olaf’s disguise and he is caught. This book would be interesting for children to read because it is so different then typical fairy tale books. A fun lesson plan that could go along with this book for students would be to have them make up their own creative and different stories like how this book was so different and interesting. They could also make displays of their favorite part of the book like a display of the school or the different characters in the book.

Fairy Tale Unit
The Fairy Tale unit was very interesting to me for a couple of reasons. First I had never read the Brother’s Grimm versions of Fairy Tales. So I really didn’t know that Fairy Tales originated from these versions that were dark and scary. I had always thought that Fairy Tales were from Disney but it was actually opposite most of the Disney versions were derived from Brother’s Grimm. I was shocked when I was reading the original versions of Little Read Riding Hood, Snow White, Cinderella, and The Little Mermaid and all of the rest of the Fair Tales. All of these Fairy Tales didn’t seem like innocent and happy Fairy Tales I’m used to hearing. They were actually kind of scary and disturbing. These are definitely too dark and scary for elementary children to learn about. So they could just learn about the newer Fairy Tales that aren’t so scary.
There are lots of different lesson plans and ideas you can get from the Fairy Tales unit. For a lesson plan I could read a Fairy Tale to the class and they could re-create their own version of it or add different endings this would be creative. I could also have a Fairy Tales theme week in class where the children learn about different Fairy Tales all week. They could also do plays or re-enactments of Fairy Tales. They could write poems about Fairy Tales and this could be a part of a poetry Fairy Tale theme. They could work in groups to write poems and have a contest to see who made the most creative/funny Fairy Tale. They could also do paintings or drawings of their favorite Fairy Tales.
Some common elements in the Fairy Tales were:
The magical theme
Young Vs. Old
Princes and Princesses
Beauty Vs. Ugly
The saving element
Main characters usually hero’s
Getting married as a common theme
Poor Vs. Rich

About Me
Hi My name is Danielle. This is my second semester at Chico State. I transfered from Butte College. My major is Liberal Studies and i'm geting a minor in Child Development. I want to become a first or second grade teacher. I worked as a teachers assistant at a Child Development Center through out High School and during college breaks. While I was a teachers assistant I realized that I really like working with children. My expectations of this course are to learn more about childrens littature, and how to incorporate it in a fun and intersting way to students.
